Cute little helpless creatures, we say.
And we tend to forget that we, also,
In our own complicated way,
may not be exactly cute
but are definitely as helpless, today,
as when science and religion were mute.

My dear Tikka. I'm so sorry, but I am not following you. What do yoy mean witht "science and religion were mute"? I feel some trouble when I see science ande religion together. They seem to me so opposite.
Opposite as they may be (or seem, for there have always been religious scientists!), science and religion are the two kinds of "answers" to our big questions as humans on this planet. What I mean in the poem is that even though we feel much "stronger" and "surer" than we were in pre-historic times, when we did not have the "moral support" that science and religion provide us, we are just as helpless, in cosmic terms, as we were then.

Thank you for your explanation.
Now I understand your point of view.
Since I'm not a poet, once a while I experience some hardships...
